Could some tell me How I could run my own server using my PC.

I know you need broadband

what else would i need.

& how would i set it up. e.g:

would i have to pay someone else for a domain name or can i set one up for free using my server on windows 2000

how could internet users set up there account for webhost e.g 50 MB of webspace for £££ a year.

would i have to pay anyone anything for my server being online for visitors to view ??

Im totaly in the dark on this one, I hope someone can help me out.

I have not got my own server yet, but im thinking about it, because if I can charge users for web space then, it would be worth buying a faster PC with broadband and windows 2000 server.

Thanks.

Jon

I had all info you needed taking me about 30mins to type out sry
It will cost you about $12,000 for all software and hardware needed with out setup
you can get a pre-setup server from Dell/Compaq for about $20k and up
Youll need a static IP not just broadband
Yes you will need to register your domain names to your IPs for $75 per domain/IP
You would need a vast knowledge of CGI and Windows 2kx Server Settings to setup user limited websites with a User gui.
Then networking costs...
DSL and cable wont cut it for a multi user server.
You would need to go with at Least a T1 line also allowing you to use Dial up access i believe upto 45 numbers.
other lines would be T3 OC-3 and OC-12
T1 being the least expensive at about $899.00 per month.
It would take you about a month to setup EVERYTHING inside win2kx to be able to support what you have in mind, then about 3 months or more to setup the User GUI.
Needless to say, there is alot more involved to hosting an internet server (that works well and is satisfactory to future and current customers.) then meets the eye.

Check out this site. It has detailed description of how to set up your pc with a cable or DSL connection for free.

You dont need to pay money at all. All you have to do is get a dynamic DNS server name and download direct update so that it keeps track of yr IP address. Mail me @ alghuh@yahoo.com for questions.
